Historical Chess Set: “The Battle of Vaslui”

♟ The Constantin Mimi Foundation announces the display of the historical chess set “The Battle of Vaslui” by sculptor Pavel Obreja in the restaurant at Castel Mimi.

👉 This unique chess set illustrates the historic Battle of Vaslui, also known as the Battle of Podul Înalt, fought in 1475 near Vaslui between the allied Christian armies of Moldavia, Hungary, and Poland, led by Stephen the Great, and the Ottoman forces commanded by Suleiman Pasha.

👑 The chess pieces, cast in patinated bronze, represent Stephen the Great’s army and Suleiman Pasha’s forces. They are designed as busts mounted on rectangular cuboid bases.

🟡 Features:

  • Turkish soldiers are depicted with circular sculptures and gold-plated elements, while Moldavian soldiers have square shields with gold-edged details.
  • Turkish horses feature square gold-plated bases, while Moldavian turrets replicate the towers of Soroca Fortress, and Turkish turrets replicate mosque towers.
  • Period-specific attire; kings, queens, and officers feature Swarovski crystal inlays.
  • All pieces except turrets are stamped with the sculptor’s initials, OP (Pavel Obreja).
  • The chessboard is crafted from solid wood with brass inlays and is registered with the State Registry for Copyright Protection.
